Andromache

Andromache

by Euripides

Andromache, the widow of the Trojan hero Hector, finds herself a captive of the Greek hero Neoptolemus after the fall of Troy. Forced to live in a foreign land, she bears him a son. However, Neoptolemus marries Hermione, the daughter of Menelaus and Helen, sparking a web of jealousy and vengeance. When Neoptolemus leaves to appease the god Apollo, Hermione, driven by jealousy, plots with Menelaus to kill Andromache and her child. Andromache seeks sanctuary at the altar of Thetis, her deceased husband's mother, desperately hoping for protection. The play explores themes of loss, captivity, revenge, and the relentless cycle of fate in the aftermath of war.
