by Euripides
'Andromache' Summary
'Andromache' by Euripides, a timeless Greek tragedy, follows the tragic fate of Andromache, the wife of Hector, the valiant Trojan hero slain by Achilles. After Troy's fall, she is given as a prize to Neoptolemus, Achilles' son. She bears him a son, but their happiness is short-lived when Neoptolemus marries Hermione, Menelaus and Helen's daughter. Fueled by resentment and jealousy, Hermione, along with Menelaus, plots to kill Andromache and her child. Andromache seeks refuge at the altar of Thetis, Achilles' mother, desperate for protection. Meanwhile, Neoptolemus' quest to appease Apollo ends in his own death. Euripides' work explores the themes of loss, captivity, jealousy, and the relentless power of fate, providing a poignant commentary on the consequences of war and the enduring power of love and family.Book Details
