However, Charlotte is in love with another man, Emmanuel, and the two of them begin an affair. When Georges finds out about the affair, he becomes enraged and challenges Emmanuel to a duel. Emmanuel is killed in the duel, and Charlotte is devastated. The novel explores the themes of love, jealousy, inheritance, and the role of women in society.
