Baitâl Pachchisi; Or, The Twenty-Five Tales of a Sprite

by Duncan Forbes

The "Vetala Panchavimshati" or "Baitâl Pachchisi", originally written in Sanskrit by Somdev Bhatt, is a collection of 25 captivating tales from ancient India. These stories revolve around Vikram, a wise and righteous king, and Betal, a mischievous and enigmatic spirit. As Vikram attempts to hang Betal, the spirit poses a series of riddles and moral dilemmas, forcing Vikram to grapple with complex ethical situations and engage in philosophical discussions. The tales, set in the 11th century, are rich in symbolism and offer valuable insights into Indian society, customs, and the human condition. They explore themes of justice, virtue, and the consequences of one's actions, providing timeless lessons on morality and living a virtuous life.
