Big Drum
'Big Drum' Summary
Philip Mackworth, a talented but struggling writer, is determined to make a name for himself in London's literary world. He believes that his novel, 'The Big Drum,' will be his ticket to success, but his efforts are constantly thwarted by the machinations of the wealthy and influential. He becomes entangled in a web of social interactions and romantic entanglements, encountering a cast of characters who embody the vices and hypocrisies of Victorian society. There's Sir Randle Filson, a wealthy baronet whose social standing is more important than his actual character, his son Bertram, who is obsessed with his own image, and the manipulative Comtesse de Chaumié, a social climber with a penchant for deception. As Philip navigates this world of ambition and superficiality, he begins to question his own values and the true meaning of success. The play culminates in a series of confrontations and revelations that expose the emptiness of the pursuit of notoriety and the importance of authenticity. Through its witty dialogue and insightful observations, 'The Big Drum' paints a scathing portrait of Victorian society, highlighting the complexities of ambition, the pitfalls of social climbing, and the importance of staying true to oneself in a world obsessed with appearances.Book Details
