Mahommah Gardo Baquaqua was born in West Africa in 1824. He was captured by slave traders and sold into slavery at the age of 11. He was taken to Brazil, where he worked on a sugar plantation for two years. In 1847, he escaped from the slave ship that was transporting him to the United States and made his way to New York City. He eventually settled in Canada, where he became a successful businessman and abolitionist. Baquaqua's autobiography is a powerful and moving account of his experiences as a slave and his fight for freedom.Book Details
