In 1803, John R. Jewitt, a young blacksmith, found himself stranded on the rugged shores of Nootka Sound, off the Pacific coast of Canada. After the trading vessel he served on was attacked by the local Nuu-chah-nulth people, Jewitt was taken captive and forced into slavery. For nearly three years, he lived among the Nuu-chah-nulth, learning their language, customs, and way of life.
