Deep Lake Mystery

Deep Lake Mystery

by Carolyn Wells

In Carolyn Wells's 'Deep Lake Mystery,' the reader is thrust into a perplexing puzzle when a well-liked and seemingly harmless wealthy man is found murdered in a sealed room. The only way out of the room is a perilous plunge through a window into a deep lake teeming with swirling eddies and treacherous rocks. The scene is further enriched with an assortment of intriguing objects left around the victim: a wreath of flowers, a crucifix, an orange, a feather scarf, crackers, a handkerchief, a feather duster, a nail, and a watch in a water pitcher. This unusual collection of items leaves the reader, alongside the protagonist, questioning the circumstances of the death and the identity of the killer. The story is a classic locked-room mystery, where the reader must piece together the clues and unravel the mystery before the detective can.
