Dwellers In The Hills

Dwellers in the Hills

by Melville Davisson Post

In the rugged mountains of West Virginia, two cattlemen, Ward and Woodford, find themselves locked in a bitter rivalry. When Ward is laid up after a mysterious accident, Woodford seizes the opportunity to exploit a contract they had made. Demanding the delivery of 600 head of cattle within three days, Woodford aims to capitalize on Ward's inability to fulfill the agreement and benefit from the recent drop in cattle prices. Ward, unable to reach the cattle himself, sends his younger brother, Quiller, on a perilous journey across the Valley River to retrieve the stock. As Quiller ventures deep into the unforgiving wilderness, he confronts the harsh realities of the world and learns invaluable lessons about responsibility, hardship, and the complex nature of human relationships. The novel, set against a backdrop of stunning natural beauty and the rugged individualism of the West Virginia mountains, explores themes of family, ambition, and the inevitable trials of coming of age.
