'Ellendigen - Deel 3 - Marius' Summary
In dit derde deel van 'Les Misérables', volgt Hugo het verhaal van Marius Pontmercy, een jonge student in Parijs. We zien hoe Marius, opgegroeid in een wereld van privilege, wordt geconfronteerd met de ellende van de armsten in de stad. Hij raakt verliefd op Cosette, de geadopteerde dochter van Jean Valjean, die zijn eigen verleden en zijn daden probeert te verzoenen. Marius wordt geconfronteerd met een keuze: zich aansluiten bij de studentendemonstraties, die vechten tegen de onderdrukking van de bourgeoisie, of blijven in zijn eigen wereld van comfort. Hij kiest voor de revolutie, en raakt betrokken bij de opstand van juni 1832. In de loop van de strijd, die voor hem de confrontatie met de realiteit van geweld en verlies betekent, ontdekt Marius de ware aard van zijn liefde voor Cosette en zijn eigen identiteit. De romantiek van hun liefdesverhaal contrasteert met de grimmige realiteit van de revolutie en de wrede gevolgen ervan.
