First Part of King Henry IV
'First Part of King Henry IV' Summary
Following the events of Richard II, where the arrogant King Richard II is overthrown and murdered, Shakespeare's Henriad continues with 'First Part of King Henry IV'. This play details the reign of Richard's illegitimate successor, King Henry IV. A rift develops between the King and his former allies, the Percys, after Henry angers the impetuous young Hotspur over ransomed prisoners. The Percys, collaborating with the Welsh and Scots, meticulously plan another rebellious deposition. Meanwhile, Henry's rebellious heir, Prince Hal, spends his time with highwaymen and reprobates in cheap taverns instead of the court. His primary companion and surrogate father figure is the disreputable old braggart Sir John Falstaff, one of Shakespeare's greatest and most amusing creations. The antics of Hal and Falstaff provide a lighter contrast to the Percys' seditious scheming, until both subplots converge at the decisive Battle of Shrewsbury. There, Hal's true nature emerges, and Henry's tenuous grip on the throne faces its ultimate test.Book Details
