Germana

by Edmond About

Germana, a young noblewoman in 1853 Paris, is consumed by tuberculosis and facing an imminent death. This dire situation becomes the catalyst for a calculated agreement: she is to marry Count Don Diego, legitimizing his illegitimate son. In exchange, her family receives substantial compensation. Their journey takes them through Italy to Corfu, where they are joined by Madame Chermidy, Don Diego's former lover and the child's mother. Still harboring a deep affection for Don Diego, Madame Chermidy becomes consumed by jealousy and impatience, her desire for him overwhelming. She crafts a manipulative scheme, employing any means necessary to achieve her goal, setting the stage for a complex web of deceit, passion, and ultimately, tragedy.
