God's fool
'God's fool' Summary
Elias Lossell, a deaf and blind man, becomes the unexpected heir to a prosperous tea merchant's fortune in the Dutch town of Koopstad. The inheritance places him in a position of immense wealth while his ambitious half-brothers, Hendrik and Hubert, struggle to maintain the business. Hendrik, consumed by greed and driven by his materialistic wife, schemes to gain control of the company and Elias's fortune. He employs various underhanded tactics to try and manipulate his brother, ultimately leading to conflict and turmoil within the family. As Hendrik's plans unfold, the novel provides a satirical commentary on the avarice and societal pressures of 19th-century Dutch society, exploring themes of wealth, family dynamics, and the corrupting influence of money. The story culminates in a complex web of intrigue, exposing the darker side of human nature and the dangers of unchecked ambition.Book Details
