God's Fool

God's fool

by Maarten Maartens

Maarten Maartens' "God's Fool" is a satirical novel set in the fictitious Dutch town of Koopstad, where money and social standing are paramount. Elias Lossell, a deaf and blind man, inherits a vast fortune from his father's tea business, leaving his ambitious half-brothers, Hendrik and Hubert, to manage the enterprise. Hendrik, driven by avarice and a headstrong wife, desires control of the firm and seeks to acquire Elias's inheritance by any means. The novel delves into themes of greed, family discord, and the corrosive influence of wealth on human relationships, offering a satirical critique of society's obsession with material success.
