A história de Fidalgos da Casa Mourisca gira em torno da família Negrões de Vilar dos Corvos, fidalgos decadentes que habitam a Casa Mourisca. O patriarca, D. Luís, vê a sua vida desmoronar com uma sucessão de tragédias, deixando a família em ruínas. Seus filhos, Jorge e Maurício, ambicionam restaurar a fortuna e o prestígio da família, mas enfrentam obstáculos intransponíveis. Jorge apaixona-se por Berta da Póvoa, uma jovem de grande virtude e beleza, filha do antigo caseiro da família. No entanto, o amor entre eles é impossibilitado pela diferença social, pois ela é plebeia e ele é fidalgo. Apesar dos laços de afeição, a sociedade os impede de unir seus destinos. A obra explora temas como a decadência da nobreza, o amor proibido, a luta contra a pobreza, a injustiça social e o peso do passado sobre o presente.
