The Divine Comedy is a journey through the afterlife, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. Dante, the protagonist, is a Christian who has lost his way in life. He is guided by Virgil through the nine circles of Hell, where he witnesses the punishments of the damned. In Purgatory, he meets the souls of those who are being cleansed of their sins.
