The novel begins with a series of strange occurrences around the world, including sightings of strange objects in the sky and unexplained explosions. As the novel progresses, it becomes clear that these are the first signs of an invasion by Martians. The Martians are technologically advanced and quickly overwhelm the Earth's defenses.
