Heidi, une jeune orpheline, est confiée à son grand-père, un vieil homme solitaire vivant dans les Alpes suisses. Malgré sa réputation de caractère rude, Heidi apprend à apprivoiser son grand-père et découvre la beauté et la paix de la vie à la montagne. Elle vit des moments précieux et développe un lien profond avec la nature et son grand-père. Cependant, sa tante la ramène à Francfort pour l'emmener vivre avec une famille aisée. Dans ce nouvel environnement, Heidi ressent un profond mal du pays et la nostalgie de sa vie passée. Elle souffre de l'éloignement de son grand-père et de la nature. Malgré la gentillesse de la famille qui l'accueille, elle reste triste et rêve de retourner dans les Alpes.
