Born in 1133, Henry II became King of England in 1154. He was a powerful and ambitious ruler, and during his reign he expanded the English empire, reformed the legal system, and strengthened the royal government. Henry also had a complex personal life, and he was often at odds with his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and his sons.
