今戸心中 (Imado Shinjyuu)
'今戸心中 (Imado Shinjyuu)' Summary
The novel follows Yoshizato, a courtesan in Yoshiwara, a district in Edo (present-day Tokyo) known for its legalized prostitution. She falls deeply in love with Hirata, a regular customer, but he leaves her to return to his hometown of Okayama, leaving her heartbroken. Meanwhile, Zenkichi, another customer, remains steadfastly devoted to her. Though initially cold towards him, Yoshizato warms up to Zenkichi upon learning he lost his fortune due to his affection for her. However, their shared poverty leads them to a desperate and heartbreaking decision: to take their own lives together. Imado Shinjū, a story of love, loss, and the harsh realities of life in Edo-era Japan, explores themes of social hierarchy, financial hardship, and the poignant consequences of unrequited love. It is a classic example of the Shinjū genre, a popular literary and dramatic form in Japan that focuses on stories of lovers committing suicide together.Book Details
