In Old Plantation Days

In Old Plantation Days

by Paul Laurence Dunbar

In Old Plantation Days is a collection of short stories by Paul Laurence Dunbar that portray the lives of slaves on a southern plantation during the antebellum period. The stories are written in a stereotypical dialect and focus on the happy, obedient nature of the slaves. Dunbar's attempt to find success with this book was only partially realized, as the stories drew criticism and anger for their stereotypical portrayal of African Americans. However, the book itself proved to be more lucrative than previous fiction works by the author.
