Jefferson-Lemen Compact
'Jefferson-Lemen Compact' Summary
This book tells the story of James Lemen Sr., a Baptist minister who traveled to the Northwest Territory in the early 1800s to work against slavery. Lemen Sr. settled in Illinois and established a Baptist Church, and he and his congregation became active in the movement to make Illinois a free state. The book draws on original sources to document Lemen Sr.'s agreement with Thomas Jefferson, his work in Illinois, and the impact of his efforts on the state's history. The book also includes a letter from President Lincoln to Lemen Jr., in which Lincoln thanks Lemen Sr. for his work in helping to make Illinois a free state.Book Details
