Nils Holgersson es un niño travieso que vive en una granja en Suecia. Un día, molesta a un gnomo y éste lo transforma en un duende. Para recuperar su forma humana, Nils debe viajar a través de Suecia con una bandada de gansos salvajes. Durante su viaje, Nils aprende sobre la geografía, la historia y la cultura de Suecia, y también sobre la importancia de la amistad y la compasión. A lo largo del camino, Nils y los gansos viven muchas aventuras y conocen a muchos personajes interesantes, tanto humanos como animales.
