'Marie: An Episode in the Life of the Late Allan Quatermain' Summary
This novel, a prequel to H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines, tells the story of Allan Quatermain's first love, Marie, a Zulu woman. It is set against the backdrop of the Great Trek in the 1830s, when the Boers were migrating away from British rule. Quatermain, a young hunter and adventurer, meets Marie when he is hired by her father to help protect their village from a rival tribe.
