'Marie: An Episode in the Life of the Late Allan Quatermain' Summary
This novel, a prequel to H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines, tells the story of Allan Quatermain's first love, Marie, a Zulu woman. It is set against the backdrop of the Great Trek in the 1830s, when the Boers were migrating away from British rule. Quatermain, a young hunter and adventurer, meets Marie when he is hired by her father to help protect their village from a rival tribe. Quatermain and Marie fall in love, but their relationship is forbidden by both of their cultures. Despite the obstacles, they marry and have a child, but tragedy strikes when Marie is killed by a group of raiders. Quatermain is devastated by Marie's death, but he eventually finds solace in his memories of her and the love they shared.Book Details
