Telemachus arrives at the hut of Eumaeus, the swineherd, who has been taking care of Odysseus's estate in his absence. Telemachus and Eumaeus talk about Odysseus, and Telemachus tells Eumaeus that he has given up hope of ever seeing his father again. Eumaeus tries to reassure Telemachus, but Telemachus is convinced that Odysseus is dead. The next day, Telemachus goes to the palace of his mother, Penelope. Penelope is overjoyed to see her son again, but she is also worried about his safety. Telemachus tells Penelope that he has given up hope of ever seeing his father again, but Penelope refuses to believe that Odysseus is dead. Telemachus and Penelope talk about the suitors who are trying to force Penelope to marry one of them. Telemachus tells Penelope that he will not allow the suitors to marry his mother, and Penelope is grateful for his support. Meanwhile, Odysseus, who has been disguised as a beggar, arrives at the palace of his son. Odysseus meets Telemachus, but Telemachus does not recognize his father. Odysseus tells Telemachus that he is a friend of his father, and Telemachus invites Odysseus to stay at the palace.
