The Kalevala is a collection of epic poems that tell the story of the creation of the world, the adventures of the hero Väinämöinen, and the forging of the Sampo, a magical artifact that brings wealth and prosperity. The poems are based on Karelian and Finnish oral folklore and mythology, and were compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the 19th century.
