Thomas Wingfield, an English gentleman, embarks on a quest for vengeance after his mother is brutally murdered. His journey takes him to Spain, where he becomes entangled in the machinations of the Spanish Inquisition and is forced into slavery. He eventually escapes and finds himself in the New World, amidst the splendor and intrigue of the Aztec empire. Wingfield becomes a confidante of Montezuma, the powerful Aztec emperor, and finds himself drawn into the complex world of Aztec politics and religious beliefs.
