'Mr Hogarth's Will' Summary
Jane and Elsie Melville are brought up by their eccentric but loving uncle, Mr. Hogarth, who believes in the equality of the sexes and provides them with a boy's education. When Mr. Hogarth passes away, he leaves his entire fortune to a previously unknown son, leaving the sisters only a meager allowance. They must now navigate a world that expects them to be governesses, while they strive to use their education to forge their own path. This novel offers a glimpse into the societal pressures and limited opportunities women faced in 19th-century Australia, while exploring themes of empowerment, independence, and the power of education.Book Details
