Pole Poppenspäler

by Theodor Storm

Pole Poppenspäler is a novel by Theodor Storm that tells the story of the childhood friendship and later love between Paul Paulsen, the son of a respected citizen of a small North German town, and Lisei, the daughter of the traveling puppeteer Joseph Tendler. The townspeople mock Tendler's plays, and they despise him and his family for their "vagabond life". Paul and Lise's feelings must constantly contend with the harsh prejudices of society.
