by Aeschylus
'Prometheus Bound (Buckley Translation)' Summary
Prometheus, a Titan who dared to defy the gods by stealing fire and giving it to humanity, finds himself chained to a rock as punishment. Zeus, the king of the gods, orders this cruel punishment for Prometheus's act of defiance. However, Prometheus knows a secret that can bring about the downfall of Zeus. Despite his suffering, he remains defiant and even prophesizes Zeus's demise. He is visited by a variety of characters, including the Chorus of Ocean Nymphs, Io, and Hermes, who offer him advice and try to understand his plight. The play ends with Prometheus still chained to the rock, awaiting his ultimate fate. It is a story of rebellion, punishment, and the complex relationship between humans and the gods, raising questions about the nature of justice and the consequences of knowledge.Book Details
