by Thomas Lodge
'Rosalynde or, Euphues' Golden Legacie' Summary
Rosalynde, or Euphues' Golden Legacie is a pastoral adventure novel by Thomas Lodge. It was published in 1590 and is considered one of the most popular and influential pastoral novels of the Elizabethan era. The novel tells the story of Rosalynde, a young woman who is forced to flee to the Forest of Arden after her father is banished. There she meets Rosader, a young man who has also been forced to flee his home. The two fall in love, but are separated almost immediately. Rosalynde disguises herself as a boy named Ganymede for safety, and Rosader does not recognize her. As the novel progresses, Rosalynde and Rosader play a game in which Ganymede poses as Rosalynde to give Rosader practice in wooing. The novel is full of comic episodes and dramatic irony, and it explores the themes of love, identity, and gender.Book Details
