Aristide Rougon, a young man from the provinces, comes to Paris with his family during the Second Empire. He is ambitious and ruthless, and he quickly makes a fortune through land speculation. He marries Renée Saccard, a beautiful but ambitious woman, and they have a son, Maxime. However, Aristide's greed and ambition eventually lead to his downfall. He is arrested for fraud and sentenced to prison. Renée leaves him and takes Maxime with her. Aristide dies in prison, a broken man.Book Details
