'Sandmann' Summary
Der junge Nathanael ist verfolgt von einer schrecklichen Kindheitserinnerung an einen geheimnisvollen Mann namens Coppelius, den er als den „Sandmann“ bezeichnet, eine dämonische Gestalt aus seinen Ammenmärchen. Coppelius, ein Alchemist, war für den Tod seines Vaters verantwortlich. Jahre später glaubt Nathanael, Coppelius in einem Wetterglashändler namens Coppola wiederzuerkennen. Seine Verlobte Clara versucht, ihn vor seiner Angst zu schützen, doch Nathanael ist davon überzeugt, dass Coppola ihn verfolgt. Er verliebt sich in Olimpia, eine wunderschöne junge Frau, die sich jedoch als eine mechanische Puppe entpuppt, geschaffen von Professor Spalanzani. Als Nathanael die Wahrheit über Olimpia entdeckt, stürzt er in den Wahnsinn. Clara versucht, ihn zu retten, aber Nathanael scheint gefangen in seinen eigenen inneren Dämonen und der Verzweiflung, seine geliebte Olimpia verloren zu haben. Der Roman hinterlässt den Leser mit einem Gefühl der Ungewissheit über die wahre Natur von Nathanaels Schicksal und der Grenzen zwischen Wirklichkeit und Illusion.Book Details
