Sertões
'Sertões' Summary
Os Sertões is a Brazilian book written by Euclides da Cunha and published in 1902. It deals with the War of Canudos (1896-1897), in the interior of Bahia. Euclides da Cunha had witnessed part of this war as a correspondent for the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, and upon returning wrote one of the greatest books ever written by a Brazilian. It belongs, at the same time, to scientific prose and artistic prose. It can be understood as a work of Sociology, Geography, History, or human criticism. But it is not wrong to read it as an epopée of sertaneja life in its daily struggle against the landscape and the incomprehension of government elites.Book Details
