Sweet Little Maid
'Sweet Little Maid' Summary
Dimple is a nine-year-old girl who lives in the South during the Reconstruction era. She is accustomed to being the center of attention, but when her cousin Florence comes to visit, she begins to realize that there are other people in the world who are less fortunate than her. Dimple and Florence have a wonderful time together, but then come the rainy days and the two children easily get bored in the house. One day, they decide to go for a walk in the woods, and they come across a group of black children playing. Dimple and Florence are immediately drawn to the children, and they start to play with them. However, their fun is interrupted when a group of white children arrive and start to bully the black children. Dimple and Florence stand up to the white children, and a fight ensues. The white children are eventually chased away, and Dimple and Florence are left alone with the black children. The black children thank Dimple and Florence for standing up for them, and they invite them to come back and play again. Dimple and Florence continue to visit the black children, and they learn a lot about their lives. They learn about the hardships that black people face, and they learn about the importance of fighting for what you believe in. Dimple and Florence's friendship with the black children helps them to become more compassionate and understanding people. They learn that everyone is equal, and that no one should be treated differently because of their race or their background.Book Details
