Thebaid, or The Brothers at War
by Jean Racine
'Thebaid, or The Brothers at War' Summary
In the ancient city of Thebes, two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, are locked in a bitter battle for the throne. Both men are driven by ambition and a thirst for power, and they will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. As the battle rages, the citizens of Thebes are caught in the crossfire. The city is torn apart by violence and bloodshed, and the people are desperate for peace. But peace seems impossible as long as Eteocles and Polynices continue to fight. In a last-ditch effort to end the bloodshed, their mother, Jocasta, pleads with her sons to lay down their arms and reconcile. But her pleas fall on deaf ears, their hatred and anger has consumed them. Polynices gathers an army outside the city walls, determined to take the throne by force. The battle culminates in a bloody confrontation between the two brothers within the walls of Thebes. In a tragic twist of fate, they kill each other in single combat, fulfilling a prophecy that they would both die by each other's hands. The death of Eteocles and Polynices plunges Thebes into chaos and leaves the city vulnerable to attack. The tragedy explores the destructive power of hatred and ambition, and the futility of war. It is a powerful and moving story that has resonated with audiences for centuries.Book Details
