Frogs
by Aristophanes
'Frogs' Summary
In "Frogs," the god Dionysus is dismayed by the state of Athenian theater. He decides to journey to the underworld to bring back the great tragedian Euripides. Along the way, he is joined by his slave Xanthias. The two encounter a chorus of frogs, who help them cross the river Styx. In the underworld, Dionysus meets with the playwright Aeschylus and the recently deceased Euripides. He stages a competition between the two playwrights to determine who is the better poet. After much debate, Dionysus declares Euripides the winner and brings him back to Athens.Book Details
