'Trachiniai (Campbell Translation)' Summary
Deianeira, wife of the renowned hero Heracles, grapples with the anxieties of her husband's prolonged absences and the rumors surrounding his exploits. She fears his infidelity and yearns for his return. While awaiting news, Deianeira receives word of Heracles' victory and his imminent return to Trachis. However, upon his arrival, Heracles brings with him a beautiful young slave girl, Iole, whom he has taken as his captive. Consumed by jealousy and a desperate desire to secure her husband's love, Deianeira acts on a deceitful plan. She sends a tunic, imbued with a poisonous substance, to Heracles, believing it will rekindle his love. The tragic outcome is devastating, as Heracles is poisoned by the tunic, suffering a slow and agonizing death. The play explores the themes of love, jealousy, betrayal, and the destructive consequences of fate. Deianeira's actions, driven by fear and insecurity, ultimately lead to the demise of her husband and the destruction of her family, leaving a lasting legacy of pain and sorrow.
