Relíquia

Relíquia

by José Maria de Eça de Queirós

A Relíquia is an 1887 novel by Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós. One of his most irreverent and fantastical works, "A Relíquia" can be read as a satire of Catholicism in Portugal, or, more broadly, of conservatism, through the memoirs of the narrator Teodorico Raposo, who, to inherit the fortune of his old and unmarried aunt, lives a double life: extremely Catholic and devout for the family, but a drunk womanizer with his friends. As a clear proof of his devotion, Teodorico undertakes the long journey from Portugal to the Holy Land as a representative of his aunt, in an effort to maintain appearances that results, according to the narrator, in adventures that would change him for the rest of his life.
