Tin Horns and Calico
'Tin Horns and Calico' Summary
In the early 19th century, the Hudson Valley of New York State was dominated by a handful of wealthy landowners known as patroons. These families owned vast estates, and their tenants lived in poverty and oppression. In 1839, a group of tenant farmers in the town of Berne, New York, issued a declaration of independence and sparked a rebellion known as the Anti-Rent War. The war lasted for several years and ultimately led to the downfall of the patroon system and the democratization of land ownership in New York State.Book Details
