Fernando Calpena, un joven idealista, se ve envuelto en los acontecimientos de la Primera Guerra Carlista durante la Regencia de María Cristina. Su amor por una joven llamada Inés, su amistad con el general Mendizábal, y su deseo de servir a su país lo llevan a luchar en la guerra.
