He discovers that she is a runaway slave from the city of Jahar, and her owner is none other than the brutal jeddak (king) of that city. Tan Hadron, with Tavia's help, escapes the battle and the two embark on a journey through the desolate Martian landscape, seeking refuge in the ancient city of Zodanga.
In Zodanga, Tan Hadron faces challenges and adventures that test his bravery and loyalty. He becomes entangled in political intrigue and finds himself caught between the warring factions of Zodanga and Helium.
