« ABC: Petits Contes » est une collection de 25 contes courts écrits par Jules Lemaître, un auteur qui aimait beaucoup les enfants. Ces histoires, généralement amusantes mais parfois un peu tristes, mettent en scène principalement des animaux. Lemaître a utilisé l'alphabet comme fil conducteur, chaque conte commençant par une lettre différente (à l'exception de la lettre W). Cette approche ludique permettait d'inciter les enfants à apprendre l'alphabet et à le retenir de manière divertissante.
