The book of Judges is a historical account of the period of time in Israel's history between the conquest of Canaan under Joshua and the establishment of the monarchy under Saul. The book is named after the judges who led Israel during this time period. The judges were not necessarily judges in the modern sense of the word, but were more like military leaders and deliverers who were raised up by God to save Israel from their enemies.
