The book of Ruth tells the story of a young Moabite woman named Ruth who marries an Israelite man named Mahlon. However, Mahlon and his brother Chilion both die, leaving Ruth and Naomi, Mahlon's mother, as widows. Naomi decides to return to her homeland of Bethlehem, and Ruth insists on going with her. In Bethlehem, Ruth works as a gleaner in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy landowner. Boaz is impressed by Ruth's hard work and loyalty, and he eventually marries her. Ruth gives birth to a son named Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David. The book of Ruth is a story of redemption and hope.
