Bank manager John Hornbury has vanished without a trace, along with a significant amount of money and valuables from the bank's vault. Despite the severity of the situation, the bank's owners, Gabriel Chestermarke and his nephew Joseph, inexplicably refuse to involve the police. Betty Fosdyke, John's concerned niece, is convinced that her uncle would never willingly commit such a crime and sets out to uncover the truth behind his disappearance. Enlisting the aid of the bank's chief clerk, Betty delves into the murky world of banking and finance, encountering a cast of suspicious characters and uncovering a tangled web of secrets. As she digs deeper, Betty uncovers a complex scheme involving embezzlement, forgery, and even murder.
