De Vulgari Eloquentia
'De Vulgari Eloquentia' Summary
Dante's De Vulgari Eloquentia is a treatise on the nature and use of language, with particular attention to the vernacular languages of Italy. Dante argues that the vernacular languages are capable of expressing the full range of human thought and emotion, and that they are therefore worthy of being used for literary purposes. He also discusses the different dialects of Italy and their relative merits, and he proposes a new, standardized language that could be used for literary purposes throughout the country.Book Details
