Don Cleofás, un estudiante que huye de la justicia, busca refugio en la buhardilla de un astrólogo. Allí, descubre una redoma donde un diablo, el Diablo Cojuelo, está cautivo. Liberándolo, Cleofás se ve envuelto en un pacto inusual. El Diablo Cojuelo, en agradecimiento por su liberación, promete revelarle los secretos y miserias de Madrid. Lo lleva en un viaje por los tejados de la ciudad, mostrándole los engaños, las relaciones ilícitas y la corrupción que se esconden detrás de la fachada de la sociedad. El Diablo Cojuelo, conocido por su ingenio y su habilidad para manipular las situaciones, se convierte en un guía irónico y mordaz para Cleofás, quien comienza a comprender las sombras que subyacen en la aparente prosperidad de Madrid.
