When the Queen of England offers to support his claim to the throne, he must weigh the costs and benefits. The Queen's support comes with strings attached: she wants Sebastian's only daughter as insurance of his loyalty. Sebastian must decide whether to risk his daughter's safety for the chance to reclaim his birthright. As Sebastian and his family travel to England to meet with the Queen, they are pursued by assassins sent by the Portuguese government. Sebastian must use all of his skills and resources to protect his family and himself. Along the way, he learns more about his own past and the history of his country. He also begins to fall in love with the Queen's daughter, Lady Mary. When Sebastian finally arrives in England, he is greeted with suspicion and hostility by the English court. He must prove his identity and his worthiness to rule Portugal. With the help of Lady Mary and his loyal followers, Sebastian eventually wins the support of the English people and the Queen.
