Lamplighter
'Lamplighter' Summary
Gertrude, a young girl, endures a harsh existence in the care of Nan Grant, a cruel and abusive woman. However, a flicker of hope emerges in the form of Truman Flint, the kind lamplighter who becomes a beacon of warmth and support in her life. After a particularly brutal episode, Truman takes Gertrude in, offering her a safe haven. Through his influence and the support of others in the community, Gertrude learns and grows, blossoming into a kind and admired young woman. Yet, her heart remains entangled with Willie Sullivan, a childhood friend and the object of her affections. After years apart, Gertrude and Willie reunite, confronting the complexities of their long-held feelings and the challenges of building a life together. The novel follows Gertrude's journey as she strives to find her place in the world, balancing the demands of her community with the yearning for love and personal fulfillment. The story delves into the harsh realities of poverty and social injustice in 19th-century New England, highlighting the strength and resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.Book Details
