Defunto is a tale by Eça de Queirós, considered his best foray into gothic or fantasy literature. The story takes place in 1474 in the city of Segovia and tells the story of the passion of D. Rui de Cardenas, a devotee of Our Lady of Pilar, for Dona Leonor, the wife of a local nobleman, very jealous, who keeps her locked up at home. The jealous husband, upon realizing D. Rui's interest, prepares a trap for the lover, who is challenged in the middle of the road by the deceased of a hanged man, who assists him in his supernatural adventure.
