'Duchess of Malfi' Summary
The Duchess of Malfi is a tragedy by John Webster, first published in 1623. It is set in Renaissance Italy and tells the story of the Duchess of Malfi, a young widow who secretly marries her steward, Antonio. Her brothers, the Duke of Calabria and the Cardinal, are enraged by this marriage and plot to have the Duchess and Antonio killed. The Duchess and Antonio are eventually murdered, but not before they have taken revenge on their tormentors. The play is a powerful exploration of the themes of love, betrayal, and revenge.Book Details
